Celebratory Peonies

After painting many small peony paintings, I was still not done with the peonies. As a result Celebratory Peonies came into being. I have put together peonies of many colours and sizes in this painting. The flowers and buds have been placed at varying angles. I love flowers popping out against a dark background in this painting. I have added many buds; closed and semi open in this painting along with the flowers which serve as eye magnets.

Spring time rejuvenates the mind, body and soul. It breathes life into nature all around us. It is symbolic of newness and fresh beginnings. The freshness and fragrance of spring is hard to miss.

Path to eternity is an ode to melodies of spring through the medium of oil painting. It is an original oil painting with compelling composition of a path in a cherry blossom orchard. The newly sprouted flowers on the cherry trees add colour and life in the painting. The grass in the light and shade contrast the pink and white flowers. The arched pathway adorned with fallen petals which prompts the viewer to look through it towards the horizon is the highlight of the painting.

Peonies in a Vase

Peonies in a Vase

The beauty of peonies prompts me to paint these flowers again and again. A card given by a dear cousin was an inspiration for this painting. The challenge was to make the peonies stand out on a light background. In the end, I was able to illustrate the volume of numerous petals of peonies. I like the fluffiness of peonies, the roundness of vase and the sharp front edge of table in this painting. The shadows of the leaves lift them in the air. The cool colour palette of the foreground and middle ground has been contrasted with a tinge of yellow in the background.

Peonies in a Turquoise Vase

Oil on Canvas (14H X 11W)

Peonies with their multiple petals are fun to paint. Painting one turquoise vase was not enough for me, so I painted these peonies in one.

Peonies in a Turquoise Vase is an original oil painting. Peonies have been placed in such a manner that each flower is tilted at a different angle. Dark wood table contrasts the light background.

The mixing of crimson lake, ultramarine blue and cadmium yellow leads to many colours and I keep experimenting with them. The different wood colours ranging from yellowish to fawn to light brown to blackish brown, can all be obtained by the use of primary colours. Also painting the shadows is as much fun as painting the highlights. The variation of values in the shadows leads to three dimensional effect. The negative painting sharpens the edges.

Poppies in my Garden 2

How individual flowers have a character, personality and aroma of their own? The folding and unfolding of petals, covered and exposed stamens and tilting of heads of few flowers. Poppies in my Garden 2 is an attempt to explore these differences and depict them through a medium of oil painting.

Poppies in my Garden 2 is a sequel to the previous poppy painting. Both oil paintings have five flowers in them. The shape of the flowers is different in this sequel and they  have been painted from a different angle. The stems are more visible. The buds add drama to the composition. The white and red flowers in the background add the required depth to the painting. There is more light on the flowers that is causing the stamens to be white in colour as compared to yellowish ones in the previous painting.

Peach Roses in a Vase

Peach Roses in a Blue Vase is an original oil painting. Creative work is a source of immense joy and satisfaction.

The sharp front edge and softened rear edge of the wooden table provide depth to the painting. The shapes and colours visible on the vase intrigued me while painting. The reds, yellows and whites were used with blues for painting the vase. The colour palette started from titanium white and lemon yellow on one hand to crimson lake, ultramarine blue, cobalt blue and ivory black on the other side. The backdrop of this painting is unique. The flowers seem to be in symphony with the background.

I hope viewing this painting brings sunshine in your life!

floral painting Roses de Nice on a Table Ode to Fantin

Roses de Nice on a Table

Roses de Nice on a Table  is Henri Fantin-Latour’s painting that adorns the wall of National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. I was fortunate to visit it within few weeks of viewing the paintings in National Gallery in London. That gave a whole new perspective to appreciate paintings of famous artists in two of the major art galleries of the world across continents.

The Dutch and Flemish galleries  were very impressive. In the French galleries it was a surreal experience to be amongst some of the most celebrated works of Renoir, Monet, Manet, Cezanne, Van Gogh and Fantin-Latour in the West building and that of Matisse and Picasso in the East building. The gallery also presented an opportunity to appreciate the works of great American, Italian and Spanish artists.

Roses de Nice on a Table Ode to Fantin

Roses de Nice on a Table

Once again, I have chosen to paint roses. What better choice could be there than to paint Fantin’s roses. Roses de Nice on a Table is a painting from the French Gallery. The title of the painting is attributed to French city of Nice situated in Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur.  So here I present my attempt at Roses de Nice on a Table. There is one red rose among the white, pink and yellow roses. As with ‘A Basket of Roses’, this painting too has a number of leaves. While painting, I always wonder how the white roses have tinges of red, yellow and blue in them.
