Daisies Study oil painting by Navdeep Kular


I have memories from childhood of daisies in the wild mountain fields. The vast expanses of white daisies shining in the green landscape always enamoured me. In those days, it had never occurred to me that I would ever paint them. When I started painting, I learned to appreciate different colours, shapes and forms.

My Peony journey started with an attempt to paint two peonies. That was two years ago. When I look at my first peony painting, I feel I should have experimented with more colours. At that point of time I was concerned about making the individual petals stand out.

Flowers in a vase

Roses, tulips, daffodils, daisies and poppies arranged in vases have been painted. Each flower arrangement is unique. The vase in each painting is of different colour, material and shape. Some vases are of ceramic while others are of glass.

The papery petals of poppies change colour as they reflect light in the following oil paintings. The pictures from the garden served as useful guide for the paintings. Poppies with their few petals are a useful starting point for any artist learning to paint flowers.

Ever since I first saw tulips in England, I have been enamoured by the beauty of this flower. I clicked many reference pictures of tulips in different colours at various locations. I have been painting tulips from very early on in my compositions.

Orchids occur in nature in many different colours and present an opportunity to the artist to explore the shapes of colour in the flowers. It is a fun activity to mix the colours you see and apply them on the canvas.
